US levies new sanctions on Iran's Central Bank (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama has ordered new sanctions on the Islamic republic, including its Central Bank, in a move to enforce a law he signed in December.

In a letter to Congress Monday, Obama said the tougher sanctions are warranted "particularly in light of the deceptive practices of the Central Bank of Iran and other Iranian banks." He said the problems included the hiding transactions of sanctioned parties, the deficiencies of Iran's anti-money laundering regime and the unacceptably high risk posed to the entire international financial system posed by Iran's activities.

The Central Bank sanctions were included as an amendment in the wide-ranging defense bill Obama signed into law at the end of 2011. The White House said Obama signed the executive order approving the sanctions on Sunday, well ahead of the six-month window he was afforded in the defense bill.

Obama's fresh swipe at Tehran come as the White House tries to both ratchet up pressure on the Islamic republic to abandon its nuclear program and dissuade Israel from launching a unilateral strike on Iran, a move that could roil the Middle East and jolt the global economy.

Obama said Sunday he does not believe Israel has yet decided whether to attack Iran and still believes a diplomatic solution is possible.

Iran insists that its nuclear pursuit is for peaceful purposes, but the West accuses Iran of developing the know-how to build a nuclear bomb. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta last week would not dispute a report that he believes Israel may attack Iran this spring in an attempt to set back the Islamic republic's nuclear program.

A Treasury Department statement said the sanctions underscore that the administration is determined to hold Iran accountable for meeting international obligations over its nuclear program. The statement said Iran should get the message that "it will face ever-increasing economic and diplomatic pressure" until it answers the world's well-founded concerns about its nuclear intentions.

The department also said foreign financial institutions engaged in "arms-length transactions" with the Central Bank would not be impacted by the sanctions that Obama ordered Sunday, but remain at risk of such penalties if they undertake significant transactions with the bank or other Iranian financial institutions.

The sanctions amendment in the defense bill compelled U.S. punishment of foreign financial institutions that conduct transactions through Iran's Central Bank in order to import petroleum. Several U.S. allies in Europe and Asia engage in such business with Iran.

The administration expressed concern at the time that the sanctions could lead to a spike in global oil prices, hampering the American economic recovery and perhaps perversely enabling Iran to reap even greater revenues from its oil exports. That would defeat the purpose of the bill, which is to hamper Tehran's alleged support for international terrorism and its ability to fund its nuclear enrichment program.

Under the law, Obama had the option of waiving penalties for national security reasons.

The White House sees sanctions as an effective method of increasing pressure on Iran and officials say the penalties have started to squeeze Iran's economy.

In recent weeks, both the U.S. and European Union have imposed harsher sanctions on Iran's oil sector, the lifeblood of its economy.

In Washington, the Senate Banking Committee also easily approved yet more penalties on Tehran last week. The sweeping measure, which is not yet law, would target Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, require companies that trade on the U.S. stock exchanges to disclose any Iran-related business to the Securities and Exchange Commission, and expand penalties for energy and uranium mining joint ventures with Tehran.

(AP) ? The United States proposed an international coalition to support Syria's opposition Sunday after Russia and China blocked a U.N. attempt to end nearly 11 months of bloodshed, raising fears that violence will escalate. Rebel soldiers said force was now the only way to oust President Bashar Assad, while the regime vowed to press its military crackdown.

The threat of both sides turning to greater force after Russia and China vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution raises the potential for Syria's turmoil to move into even a more dangerous new phase that could degenerate into outright civil war.

The uprising inspired by other Arab Spring revolts began in March with peaceful protests against Assad's regime, sparking a fierce crackdown by government forces. Soldiers who defected to join the uprising later began to protect protesters from attacks. In recent months, the rebel soldiers, known as the Free Syrian Army, have grown bolder, attacking regime troops and trying to establish control in pro-opposition areas. That has brought a heavier government response.

More than 5,400 people have been killed since March, according to the U.N., and now regime opponents fear that Assad will be emboldened by the feeling he is protected by his top ally Moscow and unleash even greater violence to crush protesters. If the opposition turns overtly to armed resistance, the result could be a dramatic increase in bloodshed.

At least 30 civilians were killed Sunday, including five children and a woman who was hit by a bullet while standing on her balcony as troops fired on protesters in a Damascus suburb, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an activist group.

Government forces firing mortars and heavy machine guns also battered the mountain town of Zabadani, north of Damascus, a significant opposition stronghold that fell under rebel control late last month. Bombardment the past two days has wounded dozens and forced scores of families to flee, an activist in the town said.

"The situation is terrifying. Makeshift hospitals are full," said the activist, who only gave his first name, Fares, for fear of government reprisal. He said the town has been under siege for the past five days and there is a shortage of food and heating fuel during the cold winter.

The commander of the Free Syrian Army told The Associated Press that, after the vetoes at the U.N., "there is no other road" except military action to topple Assad.

"We consider that Syria is occupied by a criminal gang and we must liberate the country from this gang," Col. Riad al-Asaad said, speaking by telephone from Turkey. "This regime does not understand the language of politics. It only understands the language of force."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton warned that chances for "a brutal civil war" would increase as Syrians under attack from their government move to defend themselves, unless international steps provide another way.

Speaking to reporters in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia, she called the double veto at the U.N. Security Council on Saturday "a travesty."

"Faced with a neutered Security Council, we have to redouble our efforts outside of the United Nations," she said, calling for "friends of democratic Syria" to unite "support the Syrian people's right to have a better future."

The call points to the formation of a formal group of like-minded nations to coordinate assistance to the Syrian opposition, similar but not identical to the Contact Group on Libya, which oversaw international help for opponents of the late deposed Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. In the case of Libya, the group also coordinated NATO military operations to protect Libyan civilians, something that is not envisioned in Syria.

U.S. officials said an alliance would work to further squeeze the Assad regime by stepping up sanctions against it, bringing disparate Syrian opposition groups inside and outside the country together, providing humanitarian relief for embattled Syrian communities and working to prevent an escalation of violence by monitoring arms sales.

The main Syrian opposition umbrella group, the Syrian National Council, backed the idea.

Radwan Ziadeh, a prominent figure in the SNC, wrote on his Facebook page that friendly countries should form an "international coalition ... whose aim will be to lead international moves to support the revolution through political and economic aid."

A deeply sensitive question is whether such a coalition would back the Free Syrian Army. There appears to be deep hesitation among Western countries, fearing further militarization of the conflict.

Omar Idlibi, an activist with the Syrian National Council, said action by a "friends coalition" to increase sanctions and other steps would boost peaceful opposition through protests.

But, he said, it should also include support to the FSA, which he said would prevent civilians from taking up arms, worsening the conflict.

The FSA, he said, "is a national Syrian army and as the regime has the right to get help from its Russian and Iranian allies, it is the right of the opposition to ask for help from its friends in enabling the Syrian people to achieve change."

The FSA, based in neighboring Turkey, is believed to number several thousand soldiers and it almost daily announces claims of groups of soldiers joining its ranks that cannot be confirmed. It is heavily outgunned by the powerful regime military, which still has the power to conduct focused operations that can drive the rebels out of any areas they gain control of.

But the military cannot cover everywhere at once, and FSA troops appear to be proving effective at hit-and-run attacks and have put up staunch resistance in assaults on opposition-dominated urban areas.

On Sunday, rebel soldiers attacked a military convoy in the northwestern province of Idlib, killing 14 government troops, the Observatory said, reporting that 14 other regime soldiers were killed in fighting elsewhere.

Early Saturday, regime forces bombarded the restive central city of Homs, apparently in response to FSA attacks. Activists said the bombardment was the deadliest incident of the uprising, killing more than 200 people in a single day. The regime denied any bombardment, and there was no way to independently confirm the toll.

Gunfire continued to ring out Sunday in several neighborhoods of Homs, and at least 23 people were killed in the city and nearby towns, including three children, the Observatory said. Grisly video posted by activists online showed a young boy said to have been wounded in the shooting, his jaw torn away. The video and the Observatory's casualty reports could not be independently confirmed.

The Russian and Chinese vetoes effectively killed an Arab League plan that called for Assad to hand over power to his vice president and allow the creation of a unity government. The resolution would have expressed support for the Arab League plan, which Assad rejected.

The Syrian government touted the U.N. result as a victory.

The state-run newspaper, Tishreen, vowed that Damascus will press its crackdown aiming to restore "stability and security and confront all forms of terrorism." The regime has portrayed the uprising as the work of terrorists and armed gangs as part of a foreign conspiracy.

Hundreds of regime supporters rallied in a Damascus square, waving Russian and Chinese flags in gratitude for blocking the resolution.

"Thanks Russia, thanks China for undermining the Western conspiracy against our country," said Nibal Hmeid, a 24-year-old teacher at the rally. She said Assad should now settle the situation "decisively and militarily against those armed criminals."

Fall Turkey Hunting ? Useful Tips That Will Make A Difference For ...

Even if spring is considered as the mating season for capturing the gobblers, it is not hard to fall in love with fall turkey hunting. The fall season can still provide the same exhilarating challenge that most turkey hunters associate with the spring season. In fact, fall turkey hunting has been becoming popular as well, not only for the sheer hunt but for a good chance of having that yummy fall turkey on the Thanksgiving centerpiece.

When the weather changes, there is also a change in behavior in turkeys. Instead, little offspring or young male turkeys or jakes can be seen around together with the hen flocking an area in search for food. Unlike spring, there is no gobbling activity among the toms or the mature male turkeys. This is because fall precedes winter, and the turkeys need to store sustenance before the snow hits the ground. This is also the season where it is more likely for a hen to get captured rather than a tom.

A hunter needs to observe painstakingly where the turkeys frequent to eat because that?s where they are most likely to be found. To observe the turkeys effectively, this could be done early in the morning before the sun is up. When the hunter finds out where the turkeys feed, this is the time to employ several fall turkey hunting tactics. First, the hunter just needs to wait around for that hen to come up to feed near a nesting area, a roosting area or a feeding area.

Another tactic for fall turkey hunting is to bust up a flock, and wait for the turkey to regroup. A hunter can now make strategic turkey calls to be able to attract a lost hen or jake into his direction. When a flock of turkey comes up within line of vision to feed, a hunter can scare and distract the flock so that the turkeys fly and scatter in different directions.

The turkey call that can be very useful for this fall turkey hunting tactic is the kee-kee-run call. This type of turkey call is produced by a lost young turkey that is anxious to reunite with the flock, particularly the hen. Hunters repeat the kee-kee-run turkey call a few times until finally a hen is within reach.

Turkey hunting is a very amusing experience. It involves a lot of skill and techniques. The adrenaline rush experienced by hunters has given them the excitement they need. They are fast and alert. This is because turkeys are very nice targets. Catching them would be very rewarding.

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (AP) ? Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil told people to prepare for six more weeks of winter on Thursday, making him the minority opinion among his groundhog brethren who seem to think that spring is coming early.

But with such a mild and relatively snowless winter so far, who can tell the difference?

Phil's "prediction" came as he emerged from his lair to "see" his shadow on Gobbler's Knob, a tiny hill in the town for which he's named about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

Yet groundhogs in at least five other states ? West Virginia's French Creek Freddie, Georgia's Gen. Beauregard Lee, Michigan's Woody the Woodchuck, Ohio's Buckeye Chuck and New York's Staten Island Chuck (full name: Charles G. Hogg) ? did not see their shadows. Nor did Ontario's Wiarton Willie or Nova Scotia's Shubenacadie Sam.

The Groundhog Day celebration is rooted in a German superstition that says if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on Feb. 2, the Christian holiday of Candlemas, winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow is seen, legend says, spring will come early.

Temperatures were near freezing when Phil emerged at dawn ? unseasonably warm for Punxsutawney ? and were forecast to climb into the mid-40s in a winter that's brought little snow and only a few notably cold days to much of the East.

Organizers expected 15,000 to 18,000 people to witness the prognostication ceremony that was held just before 7:30 a.m.

And the ceremony is largely that: Phil's prediction is determined ahead of time by the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club's Inner Circle, a group who dons top hats and tuxedos and decides in advance what the furry creature will predict.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett was among the spectators this year. Those who couldn't make it to Gobbler's Knob could follow the groundhog on Twitter and Facebook, or watch a webcast of the event on his website.

"What started as a small gathering in 1887 has now evolved into tens of thousands of visitors from around the nation and even the world coming to Punxsutawney to participate in this time-honored Groundhog Day tradition," Corbett said.

Phil has now seen his shadow 100 times and hasn't seen it just 16 times since 1886, according to the Inner Circle. There are no records for the remaining years.

The tradition attained a large following with the 1993 Bill Murray comedy "Groundhog Day," in which a weatherman covering the event must relive the day over and over again. Before the movie came out, Phil was lucky to have an audience of 2,500, said Mike Johnston, vice president of the Inner Circle.

And while the group has records of Phil's predictions dating back to 1886, what it doesn't have is a tally of whether Phil was right.

Johnston said the reason is simple: "He's never been wrong." Phil is "incapable of error," he said, because the groundhog smartly avoids being site-specific in his prognostications.

If Phil predicts six more weeks of winter, said Johnston, "I guarantee you someone's going to have six more weeks of winter."

Levine on 'Voice': Winning's not the focus

By Susan C. Young, TODAY.com contributor

Art Streiber / NBC

For Adam Levine, the rivalry among "The Voice" coaches isn't so much about who wins, but about making sure the contestants all get a shot.

Maroon 5 frontman and "Voice" judge Adam Levine might have the moves like Mick?Jagger, but when it comes to carrying a tune, he says he?s just a singer in the band.

?I don?t consider myself a singer. I?m a musician and a guitar player,? Levine told TODAY.com. ?I?m ... not a true vocalist.?

That said, he believes his experiences as a singer are valuable when working with the aspiring performers on "The Voice."

And even though he?s considered a judge on the NBC singing competition, which debuts after the Super Bowl this Sunday before moving into its regular time slot at 8 p.m. on Monday, Levine thinks of his job as being more of a non-competitive coach with his fellow chair-folk CeeLo Green, Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton.

(FYI, TODAY.com is powered by msnbc.com, which is a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

?We mess around with each other on the show and it?s totally playful and it?s not real,? he shared with us. ?Our job is to help these people get where they want to go. It doesn?t matter who wins. I don?t care if it?s someone on my team, someone on CeeLo?s, Christina?s. Makes no difference to me. I just want these people to all to get a shot.?

Aguilera makes it plain that she didn?t sign on to play the queen of mean.

?We all told (the producer) we?re not signing up if it?s about ridiculing someone or poking fun at their inability to sing or lack of talent,? the sassy singer told us. ?That?s not in support of anything we do as artists and we wouldn?t be a part of that.?

That said, look for a little more critiquing to take place in this go-round.

?Last year we were all finding our own comfort zone and were tired of seeing the attack, we wanted to give genuine opinion without tearing people down,? Aguilera said of last season?s gentle approach to the singers. ?This year we?re actually diving more into critiquing.?

But not tearing down.

?You don?t have to tell somebody they suck when you know exactly what was wrong with the performance,? Shelton said. ?You pinpoint whatever (was wrong).?

And there will be more mentors on the show this season including Jewel, Lionel Ritchie, Kelly Clarkson and Blake?s wife, Miranda Lambert, who got her start placing third on "Nashville Star."

?I chose Miranda and Kelly because they both survived reality talent television shows,? Blake told us. ?I wanted someone who could talk to them about what they are going through and how to handle it and how to appropriate it.??

So what are the judges ? make that coaches ? looking for this time?

?It?s not hearing myself in them, but hearing something in them that inspired me as well,??Green told us. ?This second season I?m looking for those kindred spirits in the selections I made.?

Levine said even though they have their backs to the singers in the beginning when they make their selections, once they come face to face with their charges, image plays into their development.

?To say no one cares about image is a big fat lie," Levine told us.?"Once the chairs turn around, we try to nurture them as singers and performers. Whether you are talking about Dylan or Janet Jackson, both have a vibe, an image that put out into the world. You need that to succeed in this business.?

And maybe moving like Jagger means more than being the best vocalist on the stage.

What are you most looking forward to seeing in the upcoming season of "The Voice"? Tell us on our Facebook page!

Want more on "The Voice"? Tune in to TODAY Friday for Adam Levine's appearance.

The Tea Horse Caravan: Yunnan Puer tea

Named after a town in Yunnan province, the place where it originated, pu-er tea is a winner of a tea. It is made from rather large leaves that are oxidized twice in a process that imparts a very special earthy flavor. You may know this tea as Bo-lay or Bo-lei tea, both of these are Cantonese pronunciations. In years past, very long ago, this broad-leaf tea was called nuo-shan and it came from a plant that may be related to pre-glacier trees. That Quingmao tea tree, as it is called, is in the family of Camellia or tea plants. It has long ovine-shaped leaves and grows mainly in the highlands in and near Xishanghanna along the Lancanjiang River in the southwestern region of China.
One tale about Pu-er tea tells that Kublai Khan's troops introduced this earthy tea to the rest of China. The veracity of this is questionable. Some say that a Chinese emperor was first to introduce this variety of tea to the west. He sent some to the king of England in 1806. One thing that is guaranteed is that in 1986, Pu-er tea garnered an international award at a fair in Barcelona, Spain; so it truly is a winner.
Pu-er tea is considered a mild tea. Those leaves with a light coating of mold are considered the best. Traditional medicine practitioners recommend the tea to relieve indigestion and diarrhea and to reduce cholesterol. These are only some of the medicinal effects attributed to this tea. There are many others.
Popular since Tang Dynasty times (618 - 907 CE), this tea is mistakenly spoken of as a black tea. Professionals understand why, because it is semi-fermented twice and this process is done longer than most oolong or semi-fermented teas, close to the cusp of what is done for black teas. Several call teas that are not quite black, as is pu-er, a 'Formosa oolong.' Tea made this way keeps its flavor through many infusions, more than almost all other teas. That, too, is a winner.
One thing to note about pu-er tea is that it is the only tea the Chinese like to age. Another notable fact is that they drink it with the same respect Westerners give to a fine wine that is well-aged. A third is that this is tea afficionados like to consume this tea in a leisurely fashion and after a extremely good dinner.
Should you like to so indulge, as several of us did a few years ago in Toronto at the five-star Lai Wah Heen restaurant in the Metropolitan Hotel, buy the very best. We ordered a pot of pu-er for the table at a cost of forty-eight dollars. There were ten to enjoy it and the pot? many refills throughout the dinner. Some at the table gulped, but they calmed down when told it only cost about the same price per person as a decent cup of coffee, and lots less than a decent glass of wine. And, we were to have not one but many cups full. Why was this particular one costing so much? Ordered, was a vintage forty-year-old pu-er to accompany a very fine dinner.

Compatriots at the table thought heads had turned to putty when with it was ordered individual bowls of shark's fin soup costing more than ten times that per person. After drinking the first cup of tea, they questioned their sanity and ours. Two infusions later, they were praising the decision, and by the seventh pot of tea, they deemed it phenomenal. For the first time, those new to this aged tea began touting its praises, even touting mine for ordering it.
Unusual among teas, pu-er teas are fermented (but the technical term is really 'oxidized') as a white tea or green one, or they are semi-oxidized and called an 'oolong' tea. That is the kind we had at that dinner. They can also be fully oxidized and be a black tea. Except for the oolong variety, the others are rare and often not good. The very best leaves are usually prepared as an oolong tea. Emperor Zhong of the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279 CE) learned how great this tea was when he ordered his steamed; he used only the buds with hair on them and said that was the best.?

Pu-er is versatile in other ways. Some like it mixed with chrysanthemum tea. That is called gupa cha. Made with white tea as the Emperor had it, it is called pu show. Pressed into a bowl shape, as are many other fine teas, it is called tou cha. And as a seven layer cake-tea, it is called bing cha. Made into balls, it is called tuan cha, and in a rectangular cake, it is fang cha.
No matter the shape, be sure to learn how long the tea has been set aside and properly aged. Teabags of pu-er found in a Chinatown supermarket were labeled as two-years old, others said 'five-years-old,' and some had no age. They tasted less good than either of the others. Do not expect the broken leaf teabag types to taste anywhere as good as the longer aged whole leaf varieties; but they are better than some other teas, particularly by the third and fourth infusion.

When making your tea, except for the white or green renditions, be sure the water is at a rolling boil. Most formosa oolong and black teas need water that high, past when they just start to boil. Green teas brew better at thirty degrees lower than that. And, if you want to make the very best tea eggs, use a pu-er tea, aged from two to five years.
If you want to emulate the French in their tea-drinking, as in many other food behaviors, do drink aged pu-er tea. About one-quarter of all tea consumed in France is pu-er tea. Mr. Twining, one of England's favorite tea packers, has a fine new pu-er tea. The first tea brought to England in 1712 was a pakho or 'pekoe' tea. Not the pekoe of today, the tea then was white-haired tea, the kind loved by the Emperors of China. Today the English also import lots of pu-er tea.
Researchers at Xiyuan Hospital and others at the Beijing Academy of Traditional Medicine have been going through old records. They report that in the Qing dynasty (1644 - 1911 CE), pu-er tea leaves and medicinal herbs were decocted together. Called 'Elixir Tea' and recorded in the Secret Recipes of Pills, Powders, Ointments and Pellets of Chinese Medicine in the Imperial Hospital. A recipe for it appears eight times in the Records of Pulse Conditions of Concubine Ying of Emperor Jiaqing. Medicinals using pu-er tea during Qing court times (1644 - 1911 CE) were mixed with purple leaves of perilla and grass-leaf sweetflags. Also included were the rhizome of water-plantain and Chinese hawthorn slices, among other things.

Other items about this tea were touted in Ming times from Tao Hongjing's (456 - 536 CE) annotations about bitter tea. They recommended using it with asparagus shoots and China-greenbriar leaves. Then and now, 'Elixir Tea' is thought useful for the aged. In the Records in Pulse Cases of the Qing Courts, this tea was recommended to cure chills and fevers, headaches and pains from colds, indigestion after a sickness, and nausea.
The nobility of the time, who had a liking for and overindulged in greasy and sweet food, believed in drinking pu-er tea. To them, in any of the above mixtures, it was useful in reducing obesity, improving digestion, alleviating depression, and promoting blood circulation. They also liked its taste and its effects on their mood. 'Elixir Tea' can be purchased in upscale Chinese supermarkets and tea emporia. It is still thought to be efficacious as an agent to reduce obesity. In China, it has been successfully tested on animals. Do not be fooled, however, should you want to use it to lose weight. Not all teas sold as a diet tea have it or any of the combination of ingredients used in Elixir Tea, nor are there any guarantees it will work.
The Chinese classify tea as a cold and bitter food. Its contribution when used for herbal purposes dates back at least to the Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 220 CE). Mixing teas with herbs is thought to have begun with the Southern and Northern Dynasties (420 - 581 CE) and continued to today. Large-scale consumption, that is every day drinking of tea in China started in early Tang Dynasty times (618 - 907 CE). It was the great poet Su Dong Po (1037 - 1101 CE) when writing about the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279 CE) who said that tea drinking was essential for (his own) good health. His living to age sixty-four was cause enough for other Chinese to follow him. They believed and took his words to heart. Jing Xinbo in the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644 CE) went further, he wrote about different teas in his book Food and Drink Recipes and said that one should drink it because it aids when needing to cure a disease, and it prolongs life.

Have you had your tea this day? Invest as the emperors did and be sure that at least some of the time you drink pu-er tea. You will be delighted you did. The Chinese believe in its many positive effects including its mood-enhancing effects and reduction of melancholy. They confirm that it stimulates digestion and should always be consumed after a large meal. In addition, they drink pu-er tea to help in weight reduction and detoxification as they say it cleanses the body of damaging substances. For those who drink it regularly, the Chinese believe that all tea stimulates their Qi and aids in assuring a long and healthy life.

Hollywood's Super Bowl ads: "Dictator," no "Dark Knight" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Football fans looking for a sneak peek at "The Dark Knight Rises" or "The Amazing Spider-Man" on Sunday are in for a disappointment.

The studios behind two of next summer's most anticipated superhero movies will not be shelling out the big bucks to advertise during the Super Bowl game.

It is difficult to gauge the total number of movie ads that will air during this year's Super Bowl, but barring a massive last-minute spending spree, there will be less of a Hollywood presence than there was last year.

Yes, "The Avengers" will assemble in an ad slated to air at this year's Super Bowl. And Disney will be hawking its mega-budget sci-fi epic "John Carter," including a promotional tie-in that will give viewers a chance to win a trip for two to 2013's Super Bowl in New Orleans.

During 2011's pigskin extravaganza, there were a record 14 trailers that aired, but the number of films advertised this time will likely be in the single digits. That should put the number of trailers roughly in line with the six spots that ran in 2010 and the nine trailers that aired in 2009.

Not that Hollywood is sitting out the Giants and Patriots rematch entirely.

Paramount will be on hand with spots for next summer's Sacha Baron Cohen comedy "The Dictator" and "G.I. Joe: Retaliation."

Universal has bought time, but whether the studio will use the space to trumpet next summer's "Battleship" or the family film "The Lorax" is still a closely guarded secret.

Relativity is using the big game to promote its Navy SEALs action thriller "Act of Valor" with a 30-second commercial during the fourth quarter of the game. Two more spots will hit during the pre-game analysis and a final spot will run during the post-game show.

Airing a commercial is substantially more expensive this year. Studios hoping to get their films in during the game will have to pay between $3.5 million and $4 million compared to an average of $3.1 million last year, according to a report in Media Daily News.

Indeed, some studio executives privately complained to TheWrap that the exposure was not worth the investment. More attention is paid to the price tag of the ad, they said, and not enough is given to the film itself.

That may be the case, but by not advertising, studios are turning their backs on a potential audience of more than 100 million viewers.

In the age of TIVO and Hulu, having that kind of captive audience is still worth the big money it takes to buy time, Brad Adgate, a media research analyst with Horizon Media, told TheWrap.

"There's nothing like the Super Bowl," Adgate said. "There's nothing that you can remotely compare it to. Advertising on that kind of platform builds awareness for a film, it placates those Hollywood egos, and it can make a movie bigger in the eyes of consumers. It makes it seem like even more of a blue chip movie."

Despite the appeal, Warner Bros. and Fox are sitting out the event and passing up the opportunity to promote heavily anticipated films such as "Wraith of the Titans" and "Prometheus."

Although Sony won't air any advertisements during the actual game, it will run commercials for "21 Jump Street" and "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" during the pre-game show.

Lionsgate will also have a pre-game presence, airing a trailer for its tween franchise hopeful "The Hunger Games" before kick-off.
